An extremely rare nummus of Basiliscus and his son Marcus
Lot 5055
Basiliscus & Marcus, 475-476. Nummus (Bronze, 10 mm, 0.94 g), Constantinopolis, Nicomedia or Cyzicus. [...]ET MARC[...] Diademed bust to right. Rev. Monogram of Basiliscus & Marcus. RIC 1034 var. (obverse legend). Extremely rare. Struck on a somewhat short flan and with minor deposits, otherwise, very fine.

Ex Heritage Europe 66, 16 November 2020, 4517.

When Basiliscus revolted against Zeno in 475, he proclaimed his son, Marcus, Caesar and later Augustus. Due to their short reign, their bronze coinage is extremely rare today, with all the examples offered in recent years by a certain German auction house unfortunately being modern forgeries.
